In Kolkata, the state capital, Wednesday saw the mercury soaring to 39.1 degrees Celsius, a notable three degrees above the seasonal norm. Meanwhile, districts in South Bengal such as Howrah, Hooghly, and North and South 24 Parganas are enduring even more extreme conditions, with temperatures hitting a sweltering 42 degrees Celsius, a staggering four degrees higher than usual.
